Talk thru the Bible Luke
Luke, a gentile physician, builds his gospel narrative around a historical, chronological presentation of Jesus’ life. Luke’s is the longest and most comprehensive of the four Gospels, presenting Jesus Christ as the Perfect Man who came to seek and save sinful men. Growing belief and growing opposition develop side by side. those who believe His claims are challenged to count the; cost of discipleship; those who oppose Him will not be satisfied until the Son of Man hangs lifeless on a cross. But the Resurrection insures that His ministry of seeking and saving the lost will continue in the person of His disciples once they have been equipped with His power.
Luke is a doctor and as a result of this he provides us with many details. Within Luke’s gospel he is reinforcing how Salvation is achieved as well as what believers are then called to do after Salvation.
Proposition – As we seek to understand the gospel of Luke, we will look at three specific aspects of the Son of Man.
Interrogative question – What is your faith founded on?
1. The Humanity of the Son of Man
1. The Humanity of the Son of Man
Luke 9:22 (NASB95) - “Humanity”
22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
Luke 9:44 (NASB95) - “Humanity”
44 “Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”
What event are these two verses speaking of?
Typology passages -
Luke 11:29–36 (NASB95)
29 As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, “This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. 30 “For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 “The Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
32 “The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 33 “No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.
34 “The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 “Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness. 36 “If therefore your whole body is full of light, with no dark part in it, it will be wholly illumined, as when the lamp illumines you with its rays.”
Luke 17:22–37 (NASB95)
22 And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 “They will say to you, ‘Look there! Look here!’ Do not go away, and do not run after them. 24 “For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 25 “But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
26 “And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 “It was the same as happened in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building;
29 but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 “It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed. 31 “On that day, the one who is on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. 32 “Remember Lot’s wife. 33 “Whoever seeks to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 “I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left.
35 “There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left. 36 “Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.” 37 And answering they said to Him, “Where, Lord?” And He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will be gathered.”
Just as the people rejected Noah and Jonah in the OT so will the people do to the Son of Man in the NT. (Which again points out the humanity of the Son of Man like 9:22 - says He will be rejected) The theological term for this is Typology -
Typology is a method of biblical interpretation whereby an element found in the Old Testament is seen to prefigure one found in the New Testament.
Luke 12:10 (NASB95) - If time allows turn and read vs. 1-12
10 “And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him.
31 Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.
10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
7 saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”
Luke has made it a priority in this gospel to point out the fact that the Son of Man was a 100% human.
Now, let’s look at the second thing that he points out in his gospel -
2. The Divinity of the Son of Man
2. The Divinity of the Son of Man
What is Divinity? (the quality and nature of God alone)
24 “But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the paralytic—“I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.”
21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?”
No human being has the power to say rise pick up your bed and go home. Clearly if this is what the Son of Man did then He is God.
5 And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
The context is that the Pharisees were trying to find some way to accuse Jesus. They accused the disciples of picking grain on the Sabbath and Jesus said that the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath. In other words He is the one who is in control of the Sabbath.
Christ’s coming –
40 “You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”
2 And He saw a poor widow putting in two small copper coins.
8 “I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”
24 “For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day.
The Son of Man is already gone and He says that he is coming back one day. In order for this to take place He must be fully God no questions asked.
22 And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.
They would not see it because He is will be in heaven with His Father.
69 “But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
Throughout the gospel of Luke we have seen that he (Luke) has clearly pointed out two specific things, the humanity and the divinity of the Son of Man. The theological term for this is the Hypostatic Union. (Full God/Full Man)
If you want to impress your parents go home say – “Hey do you know what the Hypostatic Union” is????????????
Luke’s Gospel is emphasizing the fact that Salvation is through faith in the Son of Man. He is fully man and fully God if you deny this then you are not saved.
If Jesus was not Fully God then why couldn’t He save you?
If Jesus was not Fully Human then why couldn’t He save you?
Here is where the rubber meets the road -
3. The Call of the Son of Man
3. The Call of the Son of Man
What does the Son of Man expect believers do?
22 “Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.
36 “But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Luke 9:58 (talking about the cost to follow Jesus, man says I will follow you always)
58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
What are these verses calling believers to do?
No matter what people do to you are blessed Be Alert Praying for strength
Very Powerful -
26 “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
The Son of Man does not want believers to be ashamed or embarrassed about Him. If we are then we are told that He will be ashamed of us when He comes back.
SO WHAT?
Believer –
Be thankful for what the Son of Man has done for you
Hypostatic Union
The call of the Son of Man is for us to become disciples of the Son of Man
DISCUSSION -
What is your faith founded on?
How do know this?
The other times the phrase “Son of Man” is used -
34 “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
22 “For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
8 “And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God;
48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
30 “It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed. 31 “On that day, the one who is on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back.
